How to Prepare and Paint your Garage Floor

Painting your Garage Floor with Epoxy Shield is a quick and economical way to transform an old and worn out floor into a beautiful and easy to clean show room floor by following these simple steps.
The first step is to remove everything from the area to give you an open, uncluttered area to work in. Next determine if there is any patching needed. Chip away any loose or spalding concrete and patch the larger holes with a cement patch and self leveling caulk any cracks in the floor first. Sweep the floor thoroughly to remove any debris. It is very important to clean the area very good with a degreaser to remove oil and grease stains, as the paint will not adhere to oily areas. I also recommend etching the floor with Zinsser Concrete Etch as this will give the floor a slight profile (like a sandpaper finish) this will allow the paint to bond or grip to the floor’s surface better. Once you are completed preparing the floor, and I can’t stress the importance of a good prep job, you are ready to begin painting.
Before you begin to paint, check to make sure the floor is clean and dry. You are now ready to apply the paint. There are a few different products available like a traditional 1-part floor coating or the more durable 2-part epoxy coatings. The 2-part coatings are similar to the “new car showroom” floors, you can even add decorative colored chips to the paint to give it that granite look or an anti-slip additive. They are very shiny and are better suited for wear and tear, not to mention resistant to most solvents and hot tire lift. Make sure you follow the label instructions on the can for mixing and application.
It is always recommended to let the paint dry and cure for as long as possible before use, usually 2 days is sufficient.
