Best Painting Techniques

Painting is an art form. Depending on what materials you are using, there are different methods to achieve the best results. In order to produce these results, here are some basic techniques to follow.

  1. When applying the paint to the brush, dip only half of the brush into the paint. Don’t go crazy and drown the brush, but don’t be too shy either. After you dip the brush, tap it gently on the side of the can to remove excess paint and prevent dripping.
  2. It’s best to paint in sections at a time. Start out by painting small 2 foot by 2 foot sections at a time. This will allow you to make the paint flow seamlessly across your work. When finished with one section and moving on to another, be sure to paint from the painted area to the unpainted area so it blends nicely.
  3. Your stroke has a big effect on how the paint appears. Long and smooth strokes produce a nicer, finished look as opposed to short, uneven ones. To prevent brush marks, complete each stroke with an upward motion toward the last wet edge to avoid brush marks. If the paint is fading on the brush, re-dip it rather than spreading paint from already wet sections.
  4. Lastly, don’t press too hard on the brush. Pressing hard can cause brush marks and uneven paint lines. In addition it can also do harm to your brush by bending the bristles.

If you abide these tips, your finished product should come out smooth and hopefully the way you intended. For more information on painting and painting supplies, click here.
